FROM The STORY of STUFF : There must be Another Way

“We are humungous waste makers in this country. Nationally, we generate over 250 million tons of garbage each year, and that is only the municipal waste – or garbage – which doesn’t even include the much larger amounts of waste from industries, mining, and construction.

“We make enough garbage each year in the U.S. to fill a convoy of 10-ton trucks long enough to wrap around the earth six times!”

“Annie Leonard is author and host of the online film, The Story of Stuff, a fast paced, fact filled expose on the hidden environmental and social costs of current systems of production and consumption. The film has become an internet phenomenon, generating over 6.5 million views in 200 countries and territories since its launch in December 2007.

“Annie has spent nearly two decades investigating and organizing on environmental health and justice issues. She has traveled to 40 countries, visiting literally hundreds of factories where our stuff is made and dumps where our stuff is dumped. Witnessing first hand the horrendous impacts of both over- and under- consumption around the world, Annie is fiercely dedicated to reclaiming and transforming our industrial and economic systems so they serve, rather than undermine, ecological sustainability and social equity.

“Many people who have seen The Story of Stuff have asked what they can do to address the problems identified in the film. She says:

“Each of us can promote sustainability and justice at multiple levels: as an individual, as a teacher or parent, a community member, a national citizen, and as a global citizen. As Annie says in the film, “the good thing about such an all pervasive problem is that there are so many points of intervention.” That means that there are lots and lots of places to plug in, to get involved, and to make a difference. There is no single simple thing to do, because the set of problems we’re addressing just isn’t simple. But everyone can make a difference, but the bigger your action the bigger the difference you’ll make.”
