This is my last Weekend Goodies post. It’s been fun, but takes up too much of my time. When I find things I like to share, I’ll just stick them up as I find them, rather than one whole post like this.

ARE YOU REPLACING YOUR PLASTIC?
I know you’ve probably seen photos of the giant piles of plastic bags here and there on the planet, whether floating on the ocean or on the beach or in slums and dumps. But are you still getting plastic bags at the grocery store? Here’s a great replacement.

They are heavy-duty, washable and hold a LOT of stuff. I take three of them to market every week and fill ‘em up. Each bag helps me not use two to three plastic bags. I’ve been using mine now for 4 years–they just don’t wear out!

BEAT SPAMMERS!
Prevent Spam Harvesters From Getting Your Email Address! “The best way to beat spam bots as well as giving your readers a way to contact you on your website is to use a contact submission form. That way your email address is never displayed and a script handles the entire mailing process. This is a great option if you use WordPress (for people using Blogger, unfortuneately it’s not an option).

“You don’t know how many blogs I’ve come across and just rolled my eyes. There it is…their email address listed right on their site. Look out spam, here it comes!

DO YOU JUST HAVE TO MOVE TO THINK?
When I was a kid, my parents and teachers would say to me: sit down, shut up and behave. But I hated sitting still! I wanted to move around! I felt crazy when I had to just sit there.

Over time, I was trained out of wiggling. It was only later that I learned that there are some people who just naturally wiggle and squirm and move around constantly because it’s just part of the way they access and intake information!

How I wish my teachers had known…and don’t your kids wish their taechers knew about this one thing?!?

CANADA HALTING FLU VACCINE
I love this–at last, people are getting smart! This study suggests that people vaccinated against seasonal flu are actually twice as likely to catch swine flu.

But plans vary across the provinces of Canada. Last month, British Columbia announced it is suspending seasonal flu shots for anyone under 65 years old, joining Quebec, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Nova Scotia in halting the immunizations. READ THE WHOLE THING HERE

IS YOUR CELL PHONE REALLY KILLING YOU?

Just prior to the recent Senate hearings on cell phone safety, Chaired by Senator Tom Harkin, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) released a new database for consumers ranking over 1,000 cell phones by the Specific Absorption Rate, known as the SAR value. The SAR value is a measure of the power of the cell phone and its potential for heating tissues.

The SAR value has been available for some time through the FCC’s own databases but has never before been made available in one central, easily accessible source in the United States. Nor is the SAR value listed on box packaging of cell phones at the point of sale for comparison purposes.

Recent experiments have found that worker bees fail to return to their hives when their navigation skills are interfered by the mobile microwaves. Cell phones were placed near beehives. These hives collapsed totally in 5 to 10 days, with the worker bees failing to return to their homes.

A full one-third of the U.S. food supply depends on pollination from bees. Apple orchards, for instance, require one colony of bees per acre to be adequately pollinated. The California almond crop alone requires 1.3 million colonies of bees, and bees actually add an estimated $15 billion in value to crops like these.

So if bee colonies continue to be wiped out in unprecedented numbers, major food shortages could result, adding to the current food crisis.

In an average year, beekeepers expect to incur losses of between 5 and 10 percent. But in 2007, U.S. beekeepers surveyed by the USDA Agricultural Research Service reported a total loss of about 36 percent of their bee colonies, up from 13.5 percent the year before. MORE HERE

WHERE DID THE NAME FRISBEE COME FROM?
A new book called Anonyponymous: The Forgotten People Behind Everyday Words, written by John Bemelmans Marciano.

Some of the people who donated their names to history did it by accident.
“There was a woman named Mary Frisbie who made pies in Connecticut,” Marciano tells Renee Montagne. “Students would throw around her pie plates after they had finished her pies, and kind of like you would say, ‘Incoming!’ they would say, ‘Frisbie!’ just to give people the heads-up that there was something spinning and flying coming at their head.”

Etienne de Silhouette was a French finance minister whose taxes “turned people into a shadow of themselves.” Luigi Galvani was an Italian physicist who discovered that muscles can be forced to move when administered an electric shock. SOLAR-POWERED SHINGLES?
I always have to laugh when I hear people talk about solar power as if it is is some kind of ‘new’ amazing, revolutionary technology. Here in Hawaii, we’ve been using it for decades.

I ask you: what’s holding the rest of the world up?

When I lived out in the country a millennia ago when I had  my kids, we had a water tank on the roof painted black to gather the heat, and black plastic hose coiled up on the barn roof to keep the water for our chickens, ducks and goats warm in the winter–primitive, yes–but so? It all works. What’s the big deal? Why do we make things so complicated?

Now someone has come up with this neat way to do it–shingles that snap together like legos! Very cool. But I still say, do what works, keep it simple and we all win. Do it now. Check out this article that shows pictures of the single HERE.

DOCTOR FISH
Doctor fish is the name given to two species of fish: Garra rufa and Cyprinion macrostomus. Other nicknames include nibble fish, kangal fish, little dermatologists and doctorfishen; in non-medical contexts, Garra rufa is called the reddish log sucker.

They live and breed in the outdoor pools of some Turkish spas, where they feed on the skin of patients with psoriasis. The fish are like combfishes in that they only consume the affected and dead areas of the skin, leaving the healthy skin to grow, with the outdoor location of the treatment bringing beneficial effects. Pigs were the champion garbage consumers in Cairo. Goats just don’t seem up to the task. When the government killed all the pigs in Egypt this spring–in what public health experts said was a misguided attempt to combat swine flu–it was warned the city would be overwhelmed with trash. The pigs used to eat tons of organic waste.

Now the pigs are gone and the rotting food piles up on the streets of middle-class neighborhoods like Heliopolis and in the poor streets of communities like Imbaba.

Ramadan Hediya, 35, who makes deliveries for a supermarket, lives in Madinat el Salam, a low-income community on the outskirts of Cairo. “The whole area is trash,” Mr. Hediya said. “All the pathways are full of trash. When you open up your window to breathe, you find garbage heaps on the ground.”

What started out as an impulsive response to the swine flu threat has turned into a social, environmental and political problem for the Arab world’s most populous nation. Killing all the pigs, all at once, “was the stupidest thing they ever did,” Ms. Kamel said, adding, “This is just one more example of poorly informed decision makers.”

When the swine flu fear first emerged, long before even one case was reported in Egypt, President Hosni Mubarak ordered that all the pigs be killed in order to prevent the spread of the disease.  READ MORE HERE

This is FASCINATING! It’s called the Cochrane Mural. Cochrane is NW of Calgary and east of Banff, in the foothills of the Rockies. This mural was unveiled last week at the Cochrane Ranch House. Each tile is 1 foot square and has its own individual picture. Each tile is by a different artist. All of them placed together form this huge mural. RIP Mary Travers
One of my favorite icons of the 60s has gone to the Happy Hunting Grounds. At 15 and 16, I used to close my door and crank up Peter, Paul and Mary full blast as I dreamt of the worlds they sang about.

Later on I moved into NYC to go to Parsons School of Design, and my roommates and I hot-footed it down to Greenwich Village whenever we could to see Peter, Paul and Mary, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, Dave van Ronk–you name them, we went to see them. I miss those days. Not for the clothes or even the music, but for the hope in the air, the knowing that there was another reality just around the corner. Now I think it’s really coming into the physical. Hold onto your toes! It’s happening!

Bless the forerunners, those singers and songwriters and protesters of such courageous heart and undying zeal who started us singing in the changing times. RIP Mary Travers, we loved you. The three sing once again HERE.

Woman Refuses To Pay Off Bank Of America Credit Card

Are you ticked off at outrageously hiked credit card rates? So is Ann Minch. And had the cojones to say so. Even if you disagree with her, this is worth a watch. I say you go, girl!

For years, says the Huffington Post article, Ann Minch of Red Bluff, Calif., has carried a balance of several thousand dollars on her Bank of America credit card, making minimum monthly payments of about $130, sometimes paying an extra $50 or $100. She says she’s never missed a payment.

Bank of America rewarded her loyalty this year by repeatedly raising her interest rate, which reached 30 percent in July. Fed up, the 46-year-old stepmother of two turned to YouTube.

“There comes a time when a person must be willing to…take a stand for what’s right,” said Minch in a Sept. 8 webcam video. “Now, this is one of those times, and if I’m successful this will be the proverbial first shot fired in an American debtors’ revolution against the usury and plunder perpetrated by the banking elite, the Federal Reserve and the federal government.” Minch announced that she’d be dumping Bank of America, refusing to pay off her credit card debt unless she was offered a lower rate.

“You are evil, thieving bastards,” she said in her video. “Stick that in your bailout pipe and smoke it.”

But then I saw this one, and all memories of the other one disappeared. I LOVED this one! This is the most fun scientist I’ve ever heard or seen! He has an absolutely beautiful ending to his speech.

MERCURY-TAINTED FOOD–WHAT’S NEW?
Mercury-tainted fish found widely in U.S. streams

Los Angeles (Reuters) – Scientists have detected mercury contamination in every one of hundreds of fish sampled from 291 freshwater streams, according to a U.S. government study released on Wednesday.

More than a quarter of those fish contained concentrations of mercury exceeding levels set by the Environmental Protection Agency for the protection of people who eat average amounts of fish, the U.S. Geological Survey report said.

More than two-thirds exceeded the EPA-set level of concern for fish-eating mammals.

“This study shows just how widespread mercury pollution has become in our air, watersheds, and many of our fish in freshwater streams,” Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said in a statement. The USGS is part of the Interior Department.

This is one of those stories that gives you back your faith in your fellow human beings. It would have been really easy for this guy to not pay any attention to this at all. Here’s a bottled water with bottles that are “carbon neutral”–made from corn and biodegradable (wonder if it’s non-GMO corn…). Very cool.

And yet–the owner is a guy who is supposedly in business, is doing a ‘good thing,’ but doesn’t have the smarts to know that you’ve got to put at least some of the money you make back into your biz so you can keep doing it. Hello?

CORAL CASTLE MYSTERY
Maybe you’ve never heard of this. Taking almost 30 years and starting in the late 1920s, Ed Leedskalnin, a man who was only 5′10″ tall, built an entire castle using 1100 tons of coral.

Coral is hard, sharp and heavy. Yet he cut each piece using hand tools, and moved each piece by himself. One story goes that his estate was broken into one night, and he was so upset about it that he moved it ALL to another location–again by himself.

How’d he do it? NO one knows. Levitation? Beaming? Here’s more. Don’t tell him your dream isn’t possible!
